Vietnam’s Stock Market Officially Enters the Secondary Emerging Market

Monday, September 21, 2026 marks the official effective date of FTSE Russell’s market reclassification decision: Vietnam’s stock market will move from Frontier Market status to Secondary Emerging Market status — marking the end of an almost eight-year journey since Vietnam was first placed on the watchlist for potential reclassification in 2018.

This milestone is the result of a sustained process of market reforms, including the removal of the pre-funding requirement for foreign investors (non-prefunding), the implementation of the KRX trading system, and the enhancement of the legal framework to facilitate more efficient access to the market for international investors.

📌 A day earlier, on September 18, the Ministry of Finance and FTSE Russell held a conference in Hanoi to mark this historic milestone, attended by leaders of the State Securities Commission of Vietnam (SSC), the British Ambassador to Vietnam, representatives of the World Bank, and major international investment funds.

📌 This milestone also provides further momentum for Vietnam’s stock market to become more transparent and increasingly aligned with international standards and practices — from information disclosure and corporate governance to trading infrastructure — laying a stronger foundation for sustainable market development and attracting long-term capital in the years ahead.

Congratulations to Vietnam’s stock market on this important milestone — a new chapter is opening for the nation’s capital market.
